July 2008 update:
Juniper gets more regal looking each
year. She is a big asset in the milking parlor and really seems to
enjoy her job there. She is easy to milk and has wonderful soft
teats that are just right for either hand milking or machine milking.
Either way, Juniper does a great job for us.
July
2007 update:
June continues to be a big asset in the
milking parlor. She is fun and easy to milk, happy to come in to work,
and is interactive and friendly. Last year Juniper liked to double-park
on the milk stands, but goat Sassy won’t let her now. Juniper has
recently developed a habit of losing her collar. I guess a girl just has
to have some kind of a hobby.
July 2006 update:
Juniper is a wonderful, productive milker.
She does, however, have a habit of “double parking” in the milking parlor.
She jumps onto her stand, then moves sideways to block the stand next to
her. It’s definitely some type of goaty game, and it never fails to throw
poor Stella for a loop since it is her stand that Juniper blocks. So the
“referee” (usually David) has to step in and move the players onto their own
stands. Then the game of goat milking can begin.
2005 update:
Juniper is definitely NOT just another pretty face. This girl can
make milk! Without much fuss or bother, she sailed through her first
pregnancy and easily delivered twins. Then she took her place in the
milking line-up and will be earning her milking star effortlessly. She
is still something of a dare-devil - sliding partly down the wash bank on
her belly, then jumping the last 5 feet to the bottom, or challenging
her friends to a game of tree climbing. Being a BMR milker doesn't
mean you can't have fun!
More background on Juniper (2004)
Juniper is our very
first speckled baby! What a surprise! She is a lovely honey brown girl
with lots of white spots dotting both sides. Of course, as the “pretty one”
we overlooked some of her other traits! However, at two weeks old her
exuberance for life got her into trouble. While dancing along the outer
edge of the deck she somehow got her foot trapped and then fell off the
deck!! A blood curdling scream brought us running to her rescue as she
dangled by one leg. Luckily she hadn’t broken
anything but she did carry the
nickname “TriPod” for about a month.
That’s when we found out how determined and tenacious she is! Our herd is
a free range bunch – traveling many miles every day. But even at 2 weeks
old and walking on three legs, Juniper kept up with the herd and never
complained. She is quite a trooper. Today, she has totally lost her limp,
but we will never consider her “just a pretty face” again!
